Trondheim 1985/85
1985/86 was an intense, productive period, which included his first large exhibition in Trondhjem Art Society (now Trondheim Art Museum) in 1985. In the exhibition room he completed a portrait of Lars Tiller, a colleague Gullvåg admired and considered his greatest role model in Trondheim.

Lars Tiller on Horseback, 1985 (Purchased by the Norwegian government as a gift to Jugoslavia in 1987. It hangs in the Norwegian-Yugoslavian House in Belgrade.)
Trondheim 1990-95
In 1992 Gullvåg painted portraits of John Ugelstad, professor of chemistry and close friend. One triptych was purchased by the Art Museum of Northern Norway, a second is in the artist’s own collection.
In 1994 he received the commission from Dagbladet Newspaper to paint their editor Arve Solstad. The commission resulted in a large series of 12-15 portraits, exhibited in Gallery Dobloug the following year under the title
12 Attempts at an Editor Portrait.
