Utsmykningen Kraft ble bestilt av Vest Agder Elektrisitetsverk i Kristiansand, og pryder kantinen i den nye administrasjonsbygningen, 5. etasje. Verket består av tre deler, og er malt på treplater.

Gullvåg utførte Kraft på atelieret sitt i Trondheim. Faktisk var hovedbildet så stort at han måtte slå ut veggen på atelieret for å få det ut. Samme problem oppsto da verket skulle fraktes inn i el-verket i Kristiansand – her fikk han hjelp av brannvesenet til å heise maleriet opp i 5. etasje.

Selv om Gullvåg også tidligere har fått malerier innlemmet i utsmykninger var Kraft hans første utsmykningsoppdrag laget for et bestemt rom. Motivet til det tredelte maleriet Kraft kretser om sauen, som fungerer som en allegori over temaet strømutvinning.

Utsmykningens hovedbilde viser en sau som løper rett mot oss, og skaper en sterk dynamikk i bildet. Strømstolper vokser på vis opp av dyrets ryggrad, slik at skrotten på surrealistisk vis samtidig danner et øde landskap.

Sauen er malt som en mellomting mellom slakteskrott og trekkdyr; samtidig som den trekker kjerren, så trues den av å bli knust av den. Slik forteller maleriet om det naturlige og gunstige ved framvinningen av ren energi, samtidig som det pekes på farene ved inngrepene i naturen. Denne høyst originale bruken av sauen fungerer overraskende godt – og illustrerer effektivt den balansegangen et el-verk bør tilstrebe mellom utvinning og utbytting av naturen.

De to småbildene er plassert et stykke unna hovedbildet. Disse er skjært ut i organiske former som speiler arkitektens bruk av bueformer i dører og vinduer. Allerede her ser vi en tendens som er karakteristisk for alle Gullvågs senere utsmykninger; han fanger opp elementer fra rommet og gjerne fra hele bygningen, og lager direkte så vel som indirekte hentydninger til dem i sine malerier. Denne formen for ekko danner på en elegant måte et samspill med stedet de henger, noe som i neste rekke forsterker følelsen av at utsmykningene hører til her.
